In our last blog post, we discussed root hair removal — a method of hair removal that involves removing hair at the root of the follicle. In this blog post, we delve into surface hair removal — the other primary method of hair removal, which consists of cutting hair at the surface of the skin. Surface hair removal has the advantage of being generally less uncomfortable than root hair removal, however it requires much more frequent upkeep.

As we discussed previously, there are 5 primary methods of root hair removal — tweezing, threading, sugaring, epilators, and waxing. Waxing — which involves applying a layer of hot or cold wax to a targeted area, then adhering a porous cloth or strip and quickly removing it in the direction of hair growth — is perhaps the most effective method of all types of hair removal.

At Celebrity Skin Chicago, we specialize in body waxing services, including bikini waxes, Brazilian waxes, eyebrow waxes, underarm waxes, and much more. If you’re interested in learning more about other types of hair removal, read this blog to learn about the two primary surface hair removal methods — shaving and depilatories — then book an appointment for waxing, airbrush tanning, or eyelash extension services at our Chicago studio today!

Shaving

The most common form of all hair removal methods is shaving. Shaving involves the use of a razor to slice down hair at the level of skin. Many women choose to shave their legs and underarm area, while men regularly use shaving to groom their facial hair. Shaving has the advantage of being a very affordable method of hair removal. It can, however, cause skin aberrations and injuries, but these can often be avoided by using a fresh blade, applying a generous amount of lubrication such as shaving cream, always shaving in the direction of hair growth, and avoiding applying too much pressure. The biggest downside of shaving is that it requires very frequent upkeep, with many women having to shave as often as daily.

Shaving
Pros
  • Easy
  • Affordable
  • Fast
  • Can be done anywhere
Cons
  • May cause cuts
  • May cause razor bumps or ingrown hairs
  • May cause razor burn
  • Requires frequent upkeep (every one to three days)

Depilatories

Depilatories are over-the-counter creams that use chemicals to dissolve body hair at the surface of the skin. Depilatories are relatively easy and quick to use. They require just a few minutes to apply then wipe off. We generally recommend depilatories for smaller areas of the body, such as armpits or the bikini line, rather than legs or the entire pubic region. You should also always avoid applying depilatory cream around your lips or eyes. Depilatories can cause problems for those with skin sensitivities, so a patch test is recommended 24 hours in advance of using any depilatory creams. Depilatory cream generally lasts longer than shaving, with many people reporting that they don’t have to reapply the product for as much as several weeks, though the duration of results depends on the quality of the product used.

Shaving
